The use of /pl or /plugins is used to scout out what plugins the server has. Personally, I'm not too concerned about that catching on as something popular. It requires a domain name along with subdomains, which most people running a server can't or don't want to pay for, or even have the technical know-how to set it up. As for something to recommend? I can't say for certain, I use a private one that I wrote for my team. For example, you can use xray and freecam to watch people dig straight for ores, you can use the enhanced flying in the clients to get from place to place, or you can use the macro keys to quickly run commands. I have one exploit that affects a couple very popular plugins, which I believe only 5 people know (3 on my team, 1 who figured it out and told us, and 1 who randomly figured it out while we were taking over a server with it). There are a couple other exploits out there, usually if they go public they get patched very quickly. You can avoid issues with this by having an auth plugin require people to login before using any op commands. Be very suspicious if a random new player asks you to help him on his server. That command could be giving anyone anything. Usually griefers will use a tool that is built to host a private server, steal the session Id of anyone that joins it (it'll disconnect you from the server for some random reason), connect to a pre defined server, and run a command before logging out.
If someone had your session ID and your username, their client could tell any server that information, and the server would believe it. Now imagine if the server you are joining is poisoned to actually capture the session ID that was sent to it and was given to a griefer that had the tools to use it. If the session ID is correct, you can log into the server. This number is then sent to the server you are trying to join, and that server then checks with the mojang auth servers to see if it is correct (offline servers skip this step). The way how this works is that whenever you log into the Mojang auth servers, your account name is associated with a random Session ID number. If you aggro a team and your server is easy to destroy and they can make a good video out of it, they'll probably keep coming back for more.Ģ) The biggest exploit at the moment is something called Session Stealing.
Now there are a few exceptions to this, however. Give it 2-3 hours and if nobody is joining, you're in the clear. Generally a post on a popular griefing forum like Hackforums will die out after half an hour if there isn't anything exciting happening on it. If they can't start destroying things or making people rage within the first 5-10 minutes of joining the server, they will usually leave. You have to understand that the majority of griefers are ~12 years old, and they loose interest very quickly. Usually, if you survive the first rush of griefers, you're in the clear.
